Banksy is an anonymous British graffiti artist known for his anti-authoritarian art, often created in public places. He made his mark as a freehand graffiti artist in 1993. His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine black humor and graffiti executed in a distinctive stencil technique. With a stealthy, ironic wit, Banksy has merged the art of graffiti with installation and performance art. His works of political and social commentary have appeared on streets, walls and bridges around the world.

Banksy’s work stems from the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. Banksy says he was inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist and founding member of the music group Massive Attack. Much of his work can be classified as temporary art.
